In the UK an estimated 3.5 million UK households are believed to be living in fuel poverty.
To address this the government have made available a number of fully funded energy grants and schemes available to support those who may need help to meet their gas and electricity costs.
All the below schemes have been especially set up to help tackle fuel poverty and we hope this guide will take you through the various grants available in 2021 and hopefully you will find that you are eligible and save you potentially thousands of £££.

Green Homes Grants 2021
Applications to the Green Homes Grant scheme closed on 31 March 2021 for all non-benefit claimants
However……….. if you receive a benefit, you can still access a grant for heating & insulation. In many cases they will be 100% fully funded.

Green Homes Grant Voucher.
If you applied for a voucher before the closing date, your application will still be processed and your allocated installer will be in touch to confirm if your application is successful.
If you have already been issued a voucher, you can still use it to get the work done.
You should redeem your voucher before it expires.
Energy Company Obligation (ECO)
This was set up especially to lower energy bills and reduce carbon emissions to meet the carbon zero target for 2050
The ECO scheme is a government-backed initiative to reduce carbon emissions and, in turn, lower heating bills for qualifying households
The Big Six energy suppliers ( British Gas – Eon- EDF etc are legally obliged to fund the install of energy efficiency measures, such as insulation and heating upgrades, and have yearly carbon targets to meet.
Who Is Eligible For ECO Funding ?
People on low income benefits are usually eligible.

This is a one-off rebate of £140 applied to all energy bills between October and March for those who qualify.
Who Is Eligible For The Warm Home Discount ?
Those in receipt of Pension Credit Guarantee Credit who will automatically receive the Warm Home Discount.
Other energy consumers on low income / means-tested benefits need to apply for the Warm Home Discount through their current energy supplier.
You will need to claim this from your energy supplier on a yearly basis as Warm Front no longer processes this grant.
Winter Fuel Payment:
Non means tested help for pensioners with their heating bills
This is an annual government grant of between £100 and £300 for retired and elderly people to help with winter heating costs.
Who Is Eligible For The Winter Fuel Payment ?
To qualify for the 2020/21 Winter Fuel Payment, you must have been born on or before 5 October 1954 and have lived in the UK for at least one day of the qualifying week, which was 21-27 September 2020.
Cold Weather Payment:
The Cold Weather Payment is a one-off payment of £25 when temperatures in your area are 0ºC or below for seven days or more.
Who Is Eligible For The Cold Weather Payment:
To qualify you must already be claiming certain types of means tested benefits, such as Pension Credit, Income Support or Jobseeker’s allowance.
Extra income for older people
Pension Credit is a tax-free, means-tested benefit designed to supplement monthly household income for retirees whose income is below the prescribed thresholds.
There are two parts to Pension Credit:
- Guarantee Credit
- Savings Credit
Who Is Eligible For Pension Credit:
Single Person – Apply if weekly earnings is below £177.10
Married People – Apply if joint weekly earnings are below £270.30
The Savings Credit element adds up to an extra £14.04 for single people and £15.71 for couples.
Energy Company Schemes / Hardship Fund
Some energy suppliers also run their own energy grants and hardship schemes to provide financial aid to those who need it – and you don’t necessarily have to be a customer to take advantage of them.
