GEco3 Grants For Insulation

Free Insulation grants are available in England, Scotland and Wales and are funded via the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) / Green Home Grants scheme.

These Green Homes Grants have helped many people to make their homes more energy efficient and lower their heating bills.

This government backed scheme is funded by the UK  ‘Big Six’ utility companies  who are obliged to provide funding to households that need to improve the efficiency of their homes.

This is to achieve the government’s goal of being net carbon neutral by 2050 but as a main aim of tackling fuel poverty across the UK.

The Energy giants have added a levy to every fuel bill in the uk  to cover the cost.

Does The Insulation Grant Have To Be Paid Back.

This is a grant so it does not have to be repaid and you will not be expected to have to pay the insulation installer.

The installer will claim the grant on your behalf and ensure your 25 year warranty is registered.

What Insulation Grants Are Available?

The bulk of insulation grants are awarded to homes that emit the largest amount of carbon.

Detached houses & Electric Heated Properties are given priority at the expense of the smaller ones who usually will not get any insulation due to the cherry picking of installers working on the scheme.

Insulation Grants For Gas Heated Properties

The Government Free Insulation scheme offers funding for a number of different types of insulation.

All currently are 100 % fully funded AND you can be eligible for more than one grant.

  • Free Loft Insulation
  • Free Wall Cavity Insulation

These benefits are usually income related benefits, disability related benefits or tax credits.

The property must be owned or be rented from a private landlord.

Social Housing & Housing Associations are not eligible sorry.

Cavity Wall Insulation Grants

The most popular type of insulation obtained through the ECO grant is cavity wall insulation. Most houses built after 1920 have a cavity between the walls to stop water ingress.

This cavity between the walls is filled with an insulating material (usually rockwool or bead) which serves as a barrier to allowing the heat to escape through the walls.

Cavity wall insulation usually costs around £20 per m2 and you can expect to pay around £1200 for an average semi if you pay privately.

Properties Not Suitable For cavity wall insulation

  • timber framed,
  • metal framed
  • stone properties
  • solid wall
  • flats – permission must be sought by all of the adjoining properties that share the cavity walls
  • damp properties

A Free survey is usually carried out to check suitability.

Solid Wall Insulation Grants

Properties that have a solid walls may be suitable for both internal wall and external wall insulation.

This involves fixing foam or insulated plasterboard to the walls and then rendering / plastering.

As these are both very expensive (£5000 – £12000) the grants are usually awarded to electric properties that save the most carbon.

Loft Insulation Grants

The grant covers the loft insulation material and installation.

To qualify your property must have no loft insulation at all, or the existing must be less than 100mm thickness of loft insulation.

Under Floor Insulation Grants

If your property has suspended wooden floors rather than concrete floors then you may qualify for an under floor insulation grant.

This involves insulating the space below the flooring and will involve taking up the floor for access.
